A Timeless Beauty

What is a timeless design?

If you think modern, you imagine clean lines and simplicity.

If you think traditional, you imagine soft edges and extra details on every piece. Maybe some ribbon details on the window treatments.

If you think maximalism, you imagine layered textures, A mixture of shapes and all sorts of colors carefully crafted together.

But what is timeless design? Timeless design is a design that transcends style preferences. It is a feeling of harmony within a design. The room feels comfortable regardless of your personal style.

When you design in a timeless manner, you are not designing for a time period or a trend, you are designing with perfect balance. With the help of our amazing team, resources and collaboration with our lovely client, we created just that in this kitchen.

From the start, we knew that this project was going to be special. From the very first meeting, our client was warm and inviting. She was straight forward about her current likes, dislikes and general disappointment in her current kitchen. Her formal culinary training was hardly ever put to use because she felt as though the kitchen lacked space, usable surface area and proper appliances. The flow of the kitchen was interrupted at every interval by an awkward sink and ill planned cabinets. The color scheme was depressing and there was no lighting.

On top of these complaints we also had an awkward secondary dining area that was somewhat forced on the space thanks to the awkward half wall.

ORIGINAL SCOPE OF WORK:

  • Eliminating the half wall if possible. There was a question about whether we could fully eliminate without support. Luckily, we had no issue taking it out altogether.

  • Adding more storage all throughout the kitchen. Display space. Closed storage. Larger appliances. Larger pantry space. Ample island storage and prep space.

  • Adding seating at the island. When I came onto the job the island was about 7'. At the kitchen's completion we had a 10' island worthy of our clients generous nature and love of hosting.

  • Adding new lighting all throughout the kitchen including: recessed lighting, new pendants, undercabinet lighting and the later addition of a small corner pendant and gallery lighting at the open shelving.

  • New flooring all throughout.

  • New flooring in the laundry room.

  • New color selections all through the first floor.

We mixed an off white hue and medium tone wood stain on the island. Nothing crazy. And yet, the perfectly subtle details in the cabinetry and countertop evoke a feeling of beauty at every corner.

Part of the magic in this kitchen was our use of warm and cool tones throughout. Our client was not afraid of using warm colors. In fact, that was her preference. We created balance by using carrera marble with subtle blue gray undertones, blue runners and interchangeable blue accessories. Along with these accents we also worked in greenery on the open shelving, perimeter and island seating.

Wall Color: the wall color we used for the space is Taupe of the Morning by Sherwin Williams.

Although the walls are not visible throughout most of the space, this neutral tone helped to blend it all together.

Wood Floor Stain: Bona floor stain in the color Provincial.

We finished the floor and opted for a water based sealer to bring out the natural brown undertones.

At the range we added a petal mosaic which we coordinated with the coffee bar area. The main field tile was from daltile. We mixed both matte and polished tiles to elevate an otherwise basic Subway tile selection.

The mixture of white and brown tones on the perimeter and island was just enough to create interest without having to introduce a permanent color into the space.

The island stain is sesame on white oak.

The color of the white cabinetry is Winters White in a dull finish.

All cabinetry and lighting/ installation was provided by Laslo Custom Kitchens.

What really stole the show was the stunning plumbing fixtures we used in such a prominent location. The Brizo faucet has affectionately been nicknamed the kitchen jewelry. The cut of the base and the bridge detail make this a spectacular piece to accentuate the space. Combined with the blanco sink in color truffle the island is not just a prep space but also a work of art. It is perfect for our client’s entertaining needs.
