Inspired by a recent trip to Utah we find ourselves completely smitten with the modern rustic home. It evokes coziness and remote relaxation. With the introduction of Yellowstone and its sister shows we have seen more and more people lean heavily into the rustic home and design. And why wouldn’t you? It’s absolutely gorgeous.

The modern rustic home is taking over our feeds. And you might wonder why. What makes the look so appealing? What makes a rustic home cozier and comfort than most, regardless of the season?
I am going to dive into a few concepts surrounding a modern rustic home and why we can’t get off this trend.
The beauty is in the details.

The modern rustic home pays attention to details. Less is more when it comes to this design so when we lean into this type of design you have to look at the construction down to the little details. Adding extra bolts to the beams in the ceiling, paying attention to how joints are coming together, sourcing the proper stone and not compromising. All in all it’s about making sure the tiny details are paid attention to. And that every small piece of design is well crafted.
Stone elements

Although hard surfaces don’t necessarily evoke softness in any way, the modern rustic home always uses natural elements especially stone masonry.
The stones you source are important to the over all look of your home so be sure you select a stone that is suited to your color scheme. Texture, color, size and installation are all important. See an opportunity to use stone as an accent? Lean into it! Texture is important in this style home and we love a good accent wall!
Neutral tones reminiscent of nature.

The modern rustic home is understated in its beauty. Can you add pops of color? Absolutely. But make one color your main accent and then accentuate the space with neutral colors that you can find locally in nature. Think rust colors, greens, browns and muted reds. There’s no need to go crazy all over in color. You want to make the space feel relaxing and warm. You don’t want to over stimulate your senses when you relax.
Mix up your wood types

There’s a movement towards matching everything and keeping it neutral. One area I love to see people mix and match in modern rustic design is their wood types. Wood elements instantly warm up a space. There is no reason to be shy with this element. Add wood to the interior of book shelves. Add a refurbished wood range hood. The wood tones do not have to match but rather complement each other.
Designer hack: make sure the undertones of your wood are consistent, and stay away from super light and super dark contrasts.
